Maria Baryamujura founder COBATI

MARIA BARYAMUJURA FOUNDER AND ED OF COBATI BECOMES AN ASHOKA FELLOW.

Maria was among the four people in East Africa, three Ugandans and a Tanzanian who were elected to join the prestigious International Fellowship of Ashoka Fellows.

Ashoka is a non-profit organization that searches the world for social entrepreneurs - extraordinary individuals with unprecedented ideas for change in their communities. Maria saw a pattern that needing breaking: urban elites monopolizing profits from Uganda's tourism.

Maria created a new way to empower rural communities along the tourist circuit to also claim benefits, helping them develop attractions such as home stays and cultural events. These locally owned enterprises also spur rural infrastructure development and stem urban migration through COBATI a none profit NGO which she is a founder and Executive Director. Maria has developed 10 of these sites, and will spread her model throughout East Africa. COBATI is open to partnerships, financial and in-kind support from interested individuals and organizations.
